Into the deep
We pulled up the anchor on the Great Bahamas Bank and continued east a little after sunrise and after a nice cup of coffee. Another beautiful day; more wind, but unfortunately right on the nose so not conducive to sailing (“gentlemen don’t sail to weather”, or at least not today on Halley).
We turned on the sonar as we approached the area where the bank ends and the ocean floor drops off into the big vast blue. We could see the color of the water change drastically and the picture on the sonar was equally dramatic. Within a span of a few minutes we went from 12 feet of water to over 1,000. Good fishing area and Chris had the gear out. He caught a barracuda but let it go.
Found a good spot to anchor off Whale Cay at the southern end of the Berry islands. The sun sets early this time of year (5:20 pm) so we had just enough time to take the dinghy to shore for a walk for us and a romp for Lucy. Now in the evening the wind has picked up and Halley is rolling a little. We keep assuring each other that the anchor is well set and that we are going nowhere. The alarm on the chart plotter will beep if we veer too far from where we dropped the anchor. Now it’s time for dinner, then bed. Another great day coming to an end.
